LUBRIJOINT
COMPOSITION
Each film coated tablet contains:
Glucosamine Sulfate (2KCl) …….. ……..500 mg
PHARMACOLOGY
Glucosamine Sulfate seems to be capable of interfering with various pathological mechanisms of Osteoarthritis, stimulating synthetic activity of the chondrocytes and inhibiting the chondrolysis provoked by the degrading enzyme released into the articular cavity during Osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine has the ability to actually provide the basic raw material necessary to maintain a healthy cartilage and also to prevent degeneration of the cartilage, which especially occurs in conditions like Osteoarthritis.
PHARMACOKINETICS
After oral administration, the total bioavailability following first pass metabolism was found to be 26%. Intramuscular bioavailability was noted to be approximately 96%. After the initial period of absorption, the drug is distributed by the blood stream and the major sites of distribution were the liver, kidneys and articular cartilage.
INDICATIONS

Osteoarthritis
Glucosamine Sulfate is indicated for long-term treatment of Osteoarthritis. It belongs to a category of drugs known as `slow acting – disease modifying anti-osteoarthritic' drugs. This is a recent categorization for Glucosamine Sulfate since it is the only agent shown to produce a positive outcome on the disease progress of Osteoarthritis i.e. reversibility of the degenerative process.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Initial suggested dose is 1 to 2 tablets t.i.d for a period of three months. One tablet two to three times per day in accordance with the severity of the disease as a maintenance therapy. Typically, it takes about 2 to 3 months for significant therapeutic responses, although some patients experienced partial relief within two weeks to a month. Once the symptoms are relieved, it is suggested that a lower dose of 1 tablet once daily can be used as a maintenance dose. If symptoms recur, upward titration of the dose is recommended.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hypersensitivity, Pregnancy
Breast feeding – It is not known whether Glucosamine Sulfate is excreted in breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast feeding while using this product is not recommended. The patients should counsel the doctor before breast feeding.
SIDE EFFECTS
It is generally well tolerated. Rarely gastrointestinal complains of nausea, epigastric pain, were found in a few patients. The future subset of patients may rarely experience urticaria and pruritus.
PRESENTATION
LUBRIJOINT is available in a unique pack of 60 film coated tablets, each containing Glucosamine Sulfate 500 mg in a mini specially designed plastic container with a configuration of knee joint embossed on the other side of this plastic container.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS
Glucosamine Sulfate exerts its benefits on the progress of Osteoarthritis so as to decrease the symptoms and also improving the structural characteristics of the joint and the cartilage. These benefits have prompted investigators to label Glucosamine as ‘slow acting, disease modifying, anti osteoarthritic drug'. There is an extensive supporting data for Glucosamine so as to claim it as a therapeutic agent, rather than a simple nutritional supplement.
The patient benefits were correlated as its therapeutic effects.
Glucosamine prevents the joint space loss in osteoarthritis. At the same time there is a minimum joint space narrowing.
It significantly reduces the symptoms of osteoarthritis i.e. pain and stiffness which may occur over a period of four to eight weeks, with a peak effect observed in many of the patients at 6 months.
Glucosamine Sulfate has shown to interfere with the degeneration process of osteoarthritis leading to a significant enhancement of flexibility and strength of collagen matrix which helps in reversing the cartilage deformity and halts degeneration of the bones at the joints.
Glucosamine causes the dose dependent suppression in the super oxide anion generation.
Glucosamine also inhibits the release of granule enzyme lysozyme from activated neutrophils and also suppress neutrophils chemotaxis.
The overall impact is a significant reduction in osteoarthritis symptom and potential effect in halting the progress of Osteoarthritis.
